Farm to School in the Northeast: Making the Connection for Healthy Kids and Healthy Farms
The Cornell Farm to School Program, NY Farms!, and the New York School Nutrition Association are pleased to announce the publication of a new Farm to School Toolkit: Farm to School in the Northeast: Making the Connection for Healthy Kids and Healthy Farms by Jennifer Wilkins, Heidi Mouillesseaux-Kunzman, Meredith Graham, Betsey Bacelli, and Martha Goodsell. Part of a Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NESARE) Program funded project, The toolkit is designed to enhance Extension educators' capacity for helping K-12 schools, colleges/universities, and farmers connect with one another for the benefit of both. Farm to School in the Northeast provides a step-by-step guide to making farm to school connections, walking practitioners through a process from planning, to implementation and evaluation. Each chapter includes a "Toolbox" filled with a variety of resources: Assessment and evaluation forms, sample position announcements, contracts, flowcharts and more will help keep you organized, confront inevitable challenges and celebrate successes as you work towards your farm to school objectives. NY Harvest for NY Kids Week

NY Harvest for NY Kids is a weeklong celebration that occurs each fall, when children, schools and families are encouraged to purchase, eat and learn about local food and agriculture. During this week many schools feature NY foods on their menus and plan activities with teachers, community groups, farmers and farmers' market. Here's a few things you can do:

    • Serve NY Produce. By doing so you'll support good nutrition for children while supporting local farmers.
    • Waldorf salad, butternut squash cookies...Get creative with your menu items!
    • Try a "new to you" New York grown fruit or vegetable.
    • Visit a farm or shop at a farmer's market.Get to know those who grow your food.
    • Learn about local agriculture. Invite a farmer into your classroom.
    • Most of all, enjoy the wide variety of quality foods from our state.
