September - Grapes

NY Farms! says it's time to Go Gather NY's Great Grapes!

Grapes are high in natural sugars. They contain vitamin C and small amounts of vitamin A and potassium. 100 grams of grapes contain about 67 calories. Phytonutrients are biologically active substances that are responsible for giving plants their fragrance, color, and flavor. Evidence indicates that phytonutrients may also protect the human body from certain cancers and heart disease. Grapes are loaded with phytonutrients such as resveratrol, quercetin, anthocyanin and catechin. Resveratrol, found primarily in the skin of grapes, has been found in preliminary studies to fight breast, liver and colon cancers. Resveratrol is also believed to play a role in the reduction of heart disease and has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. To learn more about the benefits of grapes visit http://www.tablegrape.com/health/phytochem.asp

Look for bright clean grapes that are firmly attached to the stems. Ripe grapes will have a sheen to them and should be evenly colored. Grapes should appear fresh, smooth, plump and not sticky. Grapes bruise easily so transport delicately. Store grapes in the refrigerator but allow them to come to room temperature to enjoy the intense flavor when eating.

Find a NY table-grape farmer near you. Use the list below developed using databases from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Farm Fresh Guide, Local Harvest.org, NOFA NY 2004 Organic Food Guide and the PRIDE of NY. These farms invite you to pick your own. You can also find already picked NY farm fresh grapes at many farmer's markets and on-farm retail stores.

Grapes are refreshing especially when eaten fresh. They can also be dried providing concentrated sweetness. New York is well known for grape juice and fine wine. Some thick skinned grapes will need to be peeled and some varieties may need to have seeds removed. Grapes make wonderful garnishes and are often served with cheese. Frosted grapes make an elegant desert. Grapes work well in all types of salads, and are a great accompaniment to chicken.

Attend a Grape Festival in your area. Visit the NY Farms! Harvest Calendar of Events for festival or contact your local tourism office.
