What's in Season? Strawberries of Course!
Beyond delicious flavor, local strawberries are high in vitamin C, folic acid, potassium and fiber. One needs only seven medium strawberries to obtain 141% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, while consuming only 46 claories of a delightfully sweet, fat free fruit. Strawberries are high in natural antioxidants such as ellagic acid and anthocyanins. These compounds help advance heart health, and boost total body wellness.
Strawberries should be fresh, clean, bright and have full solid red color. They should be free from moisture and dirt. Caps should be attached and be of bright green color. Strawberries are highly perishable and should be used within a day or two or frozen for later use. Fresh strawberries can be eaten uncooked or cooked. Stock the freezer with washed hulled berries or make some jam or jelly. Strawberries add good taste and lively color to any meal. They can be enjoyed fresh, with shortcake, on ice cream, in a smoothie, or tossed in cereal, salads, or yogurt. Strawberries are excellent on ice cream, in sauces, in pies and tarts, jams, jellies, custard, creams, compotes and salads. Strawberry shortcake is an American favorite or try them in the French style with a little wine and sugar.
