Why does NYS School Food Service Association support buying NY farm products?
We want to support New York state, our communities, our home towns.
Local farm and food businesses are a vital and significant part of the economy all over New York Sate, whether urban, suburban or rural.
With our purchasing choices, we can help ensure the survival of family farms. If we lose family farms, we only hurt ourselves. The quality of life in our own communities suffers.
We want to keep the base of a local food supply, where the food chain starts. Food security starts with local farms.
If we lose local farms, we lose control over how our food is grown. The closer we are to where the food is grown and processed, the more we can know about how it is grown-the practices, the environmental regulations, the food safety procedures.
We can be more assured of quality, freshness and taste.
Farms and food processing are significant businesses in New York Sate. We build good will and reputation in the community when we support local businesses.
We build relationships in the community, with our constituents, with the residents who vote on school budgets.
